FSMI Statement on the arrest of 22-year-old climate activist, Disha Ravi

Disha Ravi, a 22-year-old climate activist, has been arrested and sent to remand for 5 days on charges of sedition, criminal conspiracy. All this has happened without any evidence and also without the presence of her legal counsel. This makes this arrest illegal and a gross misuse of power. She has been supporting the ongoing farmers' protest and wants their issue to be resolved. Standing by our own farmers is not sedition. Invoking those charges is just to silence their voice. In the recent times, we have been seeing many such instances where supporters of farmers are being silenced.

STOP THE INTERNET SHUTDOWNS TO SUPPRESS FARMERS’ PROTESTS IN INDIA

We,the undersigned organizations and individuals, strongly condemn the internet shutdowns imposed by central and state government authorities to suppress the farmers’ protests at the borders of the National Capital Territory of Delhi. At present, there are lakhs of farmers who are protesting against the central government’s attempt to deregulate and privatize India’s agricultural sector which they believe would destroy their livelihoods. The farmers have been peacefully protesting at the Singhu, Tikri and Ghazipur borders for two months.

FSMI Statement on Arogya Sethu App

The Free Software Movement of India expresses deep concern over sections of the Ministry of Home Affairs order dated May 1 with regard to the Aarogya Setu app. The order mandates 100% use of the app in containment zones and the use of the app in all workplaces where restrictions are being eased. The app which was initially voluntary has now been made mandatory despite concerns of both efficiency and privacy.

FSMI strongly condemns Internet Shutdowns across the country.

FSMI strongly condemns Internet Shutdowns across the country.

The Free Software Movement of India condemns the atrocious internet shutdowns across the country to stop democratic protests. In this year alone there have been 93 instances where the government shut down the internet in various places and more recently in Assam and Meghalaya. These actions by different arms of the government have made India no 1 in terms of shutting down the internet in the world, even surpassing authoritarian countries with dictators. Shutting down the internet achieves no purpose and in fact,  increases harm to people in the country.
